In the native waters of your aquarium livestock exists a natural equilibrium of elements. Matching and maintaining the levels of these elements allows your livestock to exist healthily and grow. The product of existing filtration methods is dissolved nitrates. These nitrates must be removed, typically via water changes.
In nature, these dissolved nitrates are natural fertiliser and are consumed by the naturally occurring plant life. With the addition of light, more and more aquarists are utilising this as their chosen means of nutrient export.
